The Enchanted Joylands

My current body of work explores surreal landscapes and post-photographic aesthetics, rendered through evocative, painterly compositions that serve as artistic playgrounds for experimentation. The Enchanted Joylands reimagines traditional notions of poetic fantasy and escapism. By blending the familiar with the fantastical, the series evokes a sense of wonder and curiosity, encouraging viewers to immerse themselves in the imagery and uncover its many layers of meaning. The use of vibrant colours and intricate details draws the viewer in, inviting closer examination of the composition's various elements. These Joylands emerge from internal and surreal landscapes, reflecting illusions, fantasies, and Eastern aesthetics. Viewers can appreciate in detail how I manipulate the enchanted image between photographic realism and pictorial poetics. Through its narratives and characters — infused with a subtle touch of humour — I invite the audience to journey through the series.

My Wonderlands

My inspiration for this project arises from painterly traditions and cinematic landscapes, where digital imaging serves as a new medium through which to express my vision of utopia. My Wonderlands reconsiders the notion of the 'cinematographic' image, blending Eastern and Western pictorial influences into a cohesive visual language. The series unfolds within a fictional universe — rooted in echoes of the real world, yet untethered to any specific place or setting. Through vivid colours and theatrical juxtapositions, these composite photographs accentuate depth and scale, giving form to imagined worlds. I believe that when we pause to observe the intricacies within these large-scale works, our imagination can awaken alternate realities. This project seeks to convey a layered narrative through a distinct and meticulously crafted visual style. While it appears to explore the scenario between realism and surrealism, it also reflects on the evolving relationship between painting and photography, challenging conventional boundaries and inviting the viewer into a dialogue between the real and the imagined.

Sixteen Episodes

Sixteen Episodes is an experimental digital project that explores the intersection of abstraction, calligraphy, and subconscious image-making. Building on ideas developed in my earlier work Formless Sublime, this series draws inspiration from pictorial traditions and the structural elegance of Eastern calligraphy. Influenced by Stanley Cavell’s notion of the ‘automatic’, the work seeks a return to the calligraphic sublime through abstract forms. Each of the sixteen still images represents a distinct psychic state or inner landscape, articulated through visual languages such as chaos, clarity, sediment, and breath. These biomorphic forms hover between two- and three-dimensionality, evoking a surreal, dreamlike space. The series embraces ambiguity, simplicity, and transformation — creating a contemplative visual journey that resonates both emotionally and psychologically.

Déjà Vu

I explore the interconnectedness of photography, painting, and animation — disciplines that share a curious and profound relationship. Through digital experimentation, I re-examine traditional technologies and methods of image-making. My background in calligraphy, drawing, and painting continues to inspire my digital composites, shaping both their structure and sensibility. The electronic space I work within feels mentally supernatural, infused with a sense of beautiful mystery. It becomes a passage from the romantic sublime to surreal beauty, where cinematic and montage-like elements emerge. This exploration of the uncanny in form and space reflects a spiritual engagement with darkness — an inquiry into what lies beyond the visible.
